Research Diaries- #5

We landed back in Iloilo this week, we meaning me and all the boys, Ferdia (4), Fién (1) and Vitas (49)! It took us three days, two hotel nights and 4 airports to get here but all in all it was an ok journey- except for Fién who was a pain in the BEEP the entire way, such an awkward age group the almost twos! He is super sick on the couch now with a fever so I have the four year old with me at different coffee shops/play rooms around Iloilo while I desperately try and work!

Nakapuli na gid kami!

I am SO UNBELIEVABLY behind on analysis from the first fieldtrip as I have take on more and more projects to be able to cover by salary so I don’t run out of my job- am realising only properly now how people (women) burn out so easily in academia. Not only are we often mom-agers at home, the academic world where you have to find your own money is WILD.

ANYWAY this stay in Iloilo is about co-analysing the data from the first fieldtrip with participants from last year to create some type of grounded theory that explains the patronage relations they experience as they go about their livelihoods and deal with unpredictability and ambiguity. The final part of this stay will be carrying out behavioural economic experiments with about 200-250 fishers to explore decision-making in relation to market and environmental change- stay tuned for more!

Currently my idea for the paper/results of this first part of the project are framed like this:

In a nutshell: This paper presents a grounded theory for an economic relationship found in many trade relationships, particularly in Southeast Asia, revealing how such informal economies influence livelihoods, risk sharing and financial adaptability/resilience. We contribute a culturally informed lens on market exchanges challenging transactional views of economic behaviour while building theory directly from and with the lived experiences of our participants. Programs that disregard the embedded social and economic practices which our theory describes may unintentionally disrupt these critical networks which support coastal communities across the globe.

Thats as far as I got for now! Let the crazy working schedule begin!!

Below is an AI generated Hiligaynon version of this post (sorry for the mistakes):
